What the hell is going on?

A disturbing trend reveals itself in today’s news.

Consider:

Florida – a married teacher is given house arrest and probation for sleeping with a 14 year old student.

Nebraska – a 22 year old man faces a 50 year old prison sentence for having sex with his 14 year old wife.

Georgia – a 37 year old woman faces charges for having sex with her 15 year old husband, with whom she’s expecting a baby.

Kansas – A young man receives a 17 year sentence for what should be at most a 15 month offense under the state’s Romeo and Juliet law, except that the consentual partner was also male.

What’s going on in all these red states?  (Yes I remember Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau but that’s one to four.)

And what kind of stereotyping and prejudice remains given the inequities in the sentencing?  Why did Lafarve nearly get away with house arrest and probation while Koso faces 50 years in prison?  Why are male victims of statuatory rape treated with winks and attaboys while male perps have the book thrown at them?

Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark…er, Kansas.  And Nebraska.  And Florida.  And Georgia.

  1. It seems like the punishment meted out by the Kansas court runs afoul of the Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Kansas by treating homosexual acts differently from similar heterosexual acts. I sense an appeal in the air.
