In the aftermath of California’s recent civil rights debacle a brilliant friend of mine asked:
Will the gay community remain fired up? Unlike other oppressed minorities, most gays I know seem rather too comfortable to keep marching. I imagine, though, that all those creative gays in theatre, film, and television will be sure to punish the LDS church for years to come with some withering mockery on screen and stage. It will make some of us very uncomfortable and it will give them some satisfaction, but it’s also the safe and comfortable way to express anger and disappointment.
His words came back to me as friends sent me this link, to the latest work by Hairspray writer Marc Shaiman, starring luminaries such as Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Andy Richter, Maya Rudolph, Margaret Cho, and Alison Janney.
Is my friend right to question the endurance of the movement? Time will tell.
